Hermann Marstaller
Hermann Marstaller trat nach Abschluss einer kaufmännischen Lehre und einem Aufenthalt in London 1908 in die Firma Ulrich Gminder ein. Zusarnmen mit dem Kaufmann Eugen Natter machte er sich im Juni 1914 mit einem Versandgeschäft für fotografische Artikel in der Memmingerstraße 11 selbständig. Doch schon kurz nach Kriegsbeginn musste Marstaller einrücken. Die Kampfhandlungen an der Karpatenfront und im Westen erlebte er als Infanterist und Fernsprecher. Am 22. Januar 1919 wurde er aus dem Heeresdienst entlassen und kurz darauf vorübergehend einer Sicherheitskompanie zugeteilt. Das Versandgeschäft führten während seiner Abwesenheit vermutlich Marstallers Frau Luise Pauline Benz, mit der er seit 1912 verheiratet war, und sein Kompagnon weiter. Ergänzt wurde der Geschäftsbetrieb um die Vervielfältigung vor allem von Soldatenfotos. Die Trennung von Natter erfolgte im September 1919, danach bediente Marstaller den Versandhandel allein, jetzt von
Katharinenstraße 17 aus. Im Zuge der Weltwirtschaftskrise und starker Konkurrenz musste er das Unternehmen zum 30. Juni 1932 einstellen. Im ersten Jahrzehnt des 20. Jahrhunderts noch begeisterter Amateur, zählt Marstaller zu den Pionieren der Farbfotografie im süddeutschen Raum. Er griff schon unmittelbar nach der Erfindung im Jahr 1907 durch die französischen Brüder Lumiere deren Autochromverfahren auf. Auf Vorträgen in Reutlingen und Umgebung stellte er mit seinen Farbdias vor allem von Reisen in die Schweiz und den Schwarzwald dieses neue Farbverfahren der Öffentllchkeit vor. Seine fotografischen Kenntnisse hatte Marstaller inzwischen so weit intensiviert, dass er Aufträge etwa für den Tübinger Postkarten Verlag Gebrüder Metz ausführen durfte. Bei eigenen Postkarten bevorzugte er Motive aus Reutlingen und Umgebung. Neue Wege beschritt Marstaller bei der Aufnahme von Privatporträts: Im Gegensatz zur damals noch vorherrschenden Atelierfotografie mit ihren Hintergründen porträtierte er Personen in der freien Natur. Dadurch konnte er gleichzeitig auf eine teure Anschaffung von Requisiten verzichten. Seine Porträts ermöglichen vielfältige Einblicke in das bürgerliche Familien- und Freizeitleben sowie in die Mode und Kleidung der Zeit Abseits von bereitgelegten Kostümen seiner Atelierkollegen liebte er Momentaufnahmen. Hervorzuheben sind allerdings auch seine Fotografien aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg: Sie dokumentieren das Soldatenleben und die Kontakte mit der Zivilbevölkerung in den Karpaten.
Der Fotonachlass von Hermann Marstaller umfasst annähernd 800 Bilder und befindet sich seit 1994 im Reutlinger Stadtarchiv. Es ist der größte zusammenhängende Bestand eines Reutlinger Fotografen für die Zeit bis zum Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges.
